Resources

The tools, services, and infrastructure available to GDD researchers. Use this page to find out what already exists before setting up something of your own. Let us know if something appears to be missing!

Productivity

  • Slack: We use Slack avidly for team and project communications. Ask to get added! General announcements go in #general while announcements for Geneva-based folks go in #geneva-corner. Note that there are non-GDD individuals in our Slack workspace, including in #general and #geneva-corner. All discussion related to a specific research project should go in the project-specific channel (not direct messages).
  • Email: We maintain list-servs for sparse announcements related to GDD group meeting and GDD journal club. The Institute for Global Health (ISG) and Centre for Emerging Viral Diseases (CMVE) also have list-servs for organizational announcements. Ask to make sure you are added to all of the right ones.
  • Shared group calendar: Ask Constance to be added to the shared GDD calendar. We use this to track holidays and group events.
  • OneDrive: All of your research data and documents should be backed up on your UNIGE OneDrive account. Everyone has access to 100 GB or 1 TB of cloud storage space, depending on your position, and you can sync the OneDrive folder to your local machine and use it as a normal directory locally. Code does not need to be stored on OneDrive as it will go on Github. Project data is okay to store on OneDrive. (Setting up UNIGE OneDrive) (Data sensitivity and storage matrix)
  • Sharepoint: Team projects may also have a dedicated UNIGE Sharepoint site. The functionality is quite similar to OneDrive. Talk to your project lead about how the project is organized to determine if you need to be added to any Sharepoint sites. Requests for new Sharepoint sites must be submitted to UNIGE IT.
  • Github: All code associated with research projects should be getting committed to Github. We have an organization Github account and you can request your project lead to create a repository for you. Read more about best practices in Organizing Your Research Project (link)
  • Claude: Team members have either Claude Pro accounts or be added to the organizational Claude account for GDD. Talk to Andrew about how to get added if you need a subscription. Refer to our group AI policies here.

Computational resources and infrastructure

Work in progress

More details to be added.

  • High Performance Computing (HPC): GDD has an account with the HPC clusters at UNIGE. Talk with your project lead to confirm that you will need to use these resources and check out the information here on how to request an account and get setup (Request an account) (Set up your computer to access the HPC once you have an account)
  • Dockerhub: GDD has a Dockerhub "personal" type account to store images related to the group for now. Talk with Elizabeth if you need to store Docker images on this account. (GDD Dockerhub)
  • Shinyproxy: GDD has the ability to deploy private Shiny apps on a Shinyproxy server for authenticated dashboards with study data. More to be added here!
  • Cloudflare: We deploy some apps on Cloudflare. Talk to Andrew for more information if you need an instance to host something.

Survey data collection

Work in progress

Need to elucidate how this will work at UNIGE.

  • Redcap: The Centre de recherche clinique at HUG manages a RedCap server for the faculty of medicine. It is a fee for service model but they are very professional and take data security very seriously. We are working with them to identify a solution for offline data collection in the field (like what we do in Uvira) but currently do not have this capacity.
  • ODK: This is a great tool for collecting data. We have a hosted account with getodk but it is pretty expensive. There are also free alternatives like KoboToolbox that we use from time to time when data are not sensitive. Talk to Andrew if you want more details on this.

Socials and online presence

  • GDD website: Talk with Andrew, Elizabeth, or Constance about adding or updating your profile on the GDD website.
  • Connect with us on LinkedIn and Bluesky

UNIGE resources

Services provided by the university rather than by the group.

  • UNIGE user portal (UNIGE Portail)
  • IT support requests: IT support has a physical office in Plainpalais and online support tickets may be submitted. (link1) (link2)
  • Library: Access to journals, interlibrary loan, and individualized support with literature searches (link)
  • Covidence: Institutional account access to systematic review screening and data extraction tools (link)
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN): Access the UNIGE network while off campus. Easier to set up if you have a UNIGE-managed laptop (link)
  • eduroam: Wireless network access at UNIGE and at participating institutions worldwide. Set it up before you travel, not on arrival. (link)
  • UNIGE core research facilities: physical research facilities and laboratories (link)
  • Research and grants office: Support with identifying relevant calls, proposal preparation, budgets, contracts, and signatures. In some cases, there may be internal deadlines that apply before a funder deadline. (link)
  • EUResearch: Swiss national support network for European funding programmes, including Horizon Europe. Available for proposal reviews. (link)
  • Administrative procedures (documented in Mementos): UNIGE publishes their mementos of administrative procedures all online. If you are looking for an official university policy (e.g., leave policies, HR question, how to accept a grant, announcing a change of address), there is a memento on it -- guaranteed. (link)
